I’m back! Life has been crazy! First L started pre-school and it’s gotten busier from there. Between getting used to having to have a schedule, visiting grandparents, birthdays for 3 of our 4 member family, Halloween and Thanksgiving, there were computer problems. I was without a computer for at least two weeks and then I didn’t have a battery for another week. Now things have slowed down a bit and I am ready to write.
A little over a week ago a friend of mine on Facebook mentioned that she was going to try and make an Amish Friendship bread starter. This caught my attention as I LOVED Amish Friendship Bread as a kid and hadn’t been given a starter since I was probably a teen. She and I both did some research and decided to make this starter.
Day 3 of the making the starter
Covered with cheese cloth to breath.
It starts out very simple: 1 cup each of milk, flour and sugar. She decided on it first and after a little more research I did as well. The one that I first thought of using had yeast in it. Turns out that it is a short cut. It makes it so you can skip a few days, 5 in fact. Those first five days let this dough make it’s own yeast. The first couple of days I didn’t notice much but when I went to stir today, day 5, I could smell it. Yeast. It smells sooooo good!
Day 5 of the making the starter
Looks the same, but it's not!
Tomorrow will be a new step. In fact, I will do nothing with my starter and pretend that it is the day I got it from someone else. I just hope that it keeps going well and that I end up with some delicious sweet bread.
